Town of Wendell Announces New Planning Director
Niki Jones has been selected as the Town of Wendell’s Planning Director. He will begin his role starting August 14. For the last four years, he’s worked as Assistant Director of Housing and Neighborhoods for the City of Raleigh. During his time there, he helped manage the unprecedented growth in Raleigh’s housing market and provided key leadership in the affordable housing initiatives. Mr. Jones has extensive experience with strategic planning, economic development and project and asset management.
Mr. Jones will be responsible for the continuation of work on the 2019 Strategic Plan while developing implementation strategies for the Town’s Economic Development Plan. His work will also include working on the Wendell Falls Development Project as well as the integration of the innovative and original sections of the Town. He will evaluate and support the ongoing UDO text amendments and code updates following the completion of a Comprehensive Land Use Plan. Mr. Jones will seek to collaborate and engage with stakeholders to develop, evaluate and support the Town’s major capital investment projects.
Following a competitive recruitment and assessment, conducted by Developmental Associates, Mr. Jones was selected for his experience with organizational and strategic leadership, progressive local government experience and ability to facilitate partnerships on both a public and private level.
Born in Germany and raised overseas, Mr. Jones spent his early childhood on military bases where his father served in the Air Force. Though he spent his early years abroad, he’s Eastern North Carolina at heart. He is a graduate of East Carolina University, where he completed a B.S. in Urban and Regional Planning and an M.S. in Public Administration. He has over 15 years of experience working for local governments, including the cities of Durham, Greenville, and most recently, Raleigh. His experience is impressive and comprehensive - it includes land use, zoning, economic development, and community development. He is also a member of the American Institute of Certified Planners and a graduate of the UNC School of Government’s Public Executive Leadership Academy.
Mr. Jones, his wife and daughter have lived in Wendell since 2016. They are proud to call Wendell home. He looks forward to being part of the great things that are happening in the town.
