Wendell Pedestrian Plan

The Town of Wendell was awarded a grant from NC-DOT to prepare a pedestrian plan.  The purpose of the pedestrian plan is to evaluate the town's existing pedestrian facilities, identify existing obstacle, gaps, and needs, and prioritize funding for new pedestrian facilities and improvements in the future.  STANTEC was selected by NCDOT to provide consulting services to help create and implement the plan.  The Town formed a pedestrian steering committee to obtain input from various local stakeholder groups.  Adoption of this plan is tentatively scheduled for September of 2017.

Collector and Arterial Plan Update

In March of 2015, the Town of Wendell entered into a contract with A. Morton Thomas and Associates (AMT) to update the town's collector and thorourghfare transportation plans.  The purpose of this plan will be to provide road classifications for all existing roads, recommend future road connections, provide a detailed cross-section for Wendell Falls Parkway coming into the downtown, and create clear development and improvement standards.  This plan was adopted in 2016.

Wendell Falls PUD Amendment

In November of 2015, the developer of Wendell Falls, Newland Communities, was approved by the Town of Wendell Board of Commissioners to revise the Planned Unit Development (PUD) guidelines governing their property. The proposed PUD amendments kept the project at a maximum of 4,000 residential units and 2,000,000 square feet of non-residential use. Below are the documents that contain the approved changes.

Multi-Jurisdictional Hazard Mitigation Plan: 


The Town of Wendell is working with other Wake County municipalities to become less vulnerable to natural disasters, and your participation in this planning process is important to us! The county, along with local jurisdictions and other partners, are working to prepare a multi-jurisdictional Hazard Mitigation Plan. This Plan will identify and assess our community’s natural hazard risks and determine how to best minimize or manage those risks. Having an established Hazard Mitigation Plan is important to citizens in that it helps to determine flood insurance rates and the ability to apply for recovery funds should the state of North Carolina declare a state disaster. The anticipated draft of the multi-jurisdictional Hazard Mitigation Plan is summer 2014.


Community Development Block Grant: 

Wake County received federal funds through the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Program to conduct Phase I storm drainage improvements within the Town of Wendell along Anderson Street and Poplar Street. This project served to reduce drainage issues in the affected project area. The County also recieved federal funds to pave a portio nfo Anderson Street and add a sidewalk to one side of the street.  Contact the Planning Department at (919) 365-4448 for any questions.  For more information on the Wake County CDBG program, please visit: 

Anderson Street Phase I Stormwater Drainage Improvements were completed in 2013.  The paving of Poplar street was completed in the fall of 2014.

U-5323 Transportation Intersection Project (TIP):

The Town of Wendell anticipates that areas within the vicinity of the intersection at Eagle Rock Road and Rolesville Road will develop into more intense land uses over the next few years. The Town wished to develop a project to handle the anticipated future development traffic, while improving safety and access at this intersection area. The Town worked with a planning consultant on pre-construction planning and design for the Eagle Rock Road/Rolesville Road intersection. This project looked into intersection improvements design and NEPA considerations, including TIA. Community meetings were  held to engage local residents and business during the planning and design stages.  Results from the study were forwarded to the Capital Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (CAMPO).

Northeast Area Study (NEAS):


Beginning in January 2013, the Town of Wendell participated in a study through the Capital Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (CAMPO) to create our transportation future along with Bunn, Knightdale, Rolesville, Wake Forest, Wendell, Youngsville, and Zebulon as well as Wake/Franklin Counties, NCDOT, and other transportation and land regulatory stakeholders. Small Business Resource Center: 

The Planning Department recently launched a small business resource center. The Small Business Resource Center will house information on How to Start A Small Business in Wendell, applications, fee schedules, business incentives, and local and regional resource information in order to provide greater assistance to prospective small business owners looking to expand or relocate to Wendell. The Small Business Resource Center information is available here. 

Wayfinding Signage Guidebook:

Town of Wendell adopted a Wayfinding Signage Guidebook in February 2013. The Town anticipates exploring implementation plan of this program soon. 

Planning Department Webpage Redesign: 

The Planning Department completed a webpage redesign that will make navigating information, forms and news on our webpage easier in the future. The Planning Department intends to make finding information easier and provide more transparency to our planning processes. We hope the public will find the webpage user-friendly and resourceful and welcome your comments and feedback for improvements. 

Economic Development Strategic Plan:

The Town adopted an Economic Development Strategic Plan in January 2013. The Town of Wendell seeks to connect existing ongoing initiatives and projects to broader economic development goals for the town; attract new and retain existing businesses within the town; and identify challenges to economic growth and create targeted strategies for stronger success. Downtown Facade Grant Program:

In the Spring of 2013, the Planning Department, with the assistance of the Appearance Commission and Economic Development, revised the Downtown Facade Grant Program. It was adopted by the Board of Commissioners.
