At its June 22, 2009 meeting, the Wendell Board of Commissioners voted unanimously to increase the town's water rates (as of July 1, 2009) by 8.1%. The rate increase will be approximately $4.20 per month for the average customer. The rate increase was not undertaken lightly by the Wendell Town Board. Many Wendell customers felt they would not have to incur a rate increase once the town merged utilities with the City of Raleigh in 2006. However, the fee increase was necessary due to water and sewer revenues not meeting projections as a result of several factors, including conservation measures, failure to meet anticipated population projections, the unanticipated increase in Raleigh's rates and the increased cost of maintaining the existing utility system. The Town Board is attempting to be proactive in working with the City of Raleigh to circumvent problems in the years to come. The Town Board hopes addressing the issue quickly will help prevent the institution of a rate surcharge on Wendell customers by the City of Raleigh in the future.
