Fat, Oil & Grease Notice
It has been determined that an excessive amount of fats, oil and/or grease is:
- Entering our wastewater system
- Coming from your residence
- Coming from your neighborhood
Sewer back-ups and overflows result in property and environmental damage. They are most commonly caused by improper materials such as fat, oil and grease being discharged into the Town sewer system. Since these substances do not dissolve and tend to float on the surface, they build up, collect on the tops and sides of the sewer pipes and eventually cause a blockage and potentially a back-up or overflow.
Sanitary sewer systems are designed to handle and treat human waste, toilet paper and used water. By following simple guidelines, you can help protect the natural waterways, maintain sewer systems and reduce treatment costs. Please refer to the following DOs & DO NOTs concerned with Fat, Oil and Grease.
Do:
- Collect grease in a container and dispose in the garbage.
- Put solid waste such as disposable diapers and personal hygiene products in a wastebasket.
- Place food scraps in the garbage for disposal with solid waste.
Do Not:
- Pour grease, fats and oils from cooking down the drain.
- Use the toilet as a wastebasket.
- Use the sewer as a means to dispose of food or scraps.
