Crisis Intervention Team (C.I.T)

The Crisis Intervention Team is a community partnership between Law Enforcement, the Mental Health Care Profession, and Mental Health Organizations. The goals of the C.I.T. program are: to improve Officer and Mental Health Consumer safety, and to identify and redirect Mental Health Consumers from the Judicial System to the Mental Health Care System. The C.I.T program was founded in Memphis, Tennessee where Law Enforcement and Mental Health Care Professionals recognized that there is a special population of people that deserve special care, treatment, and service. C.I.T. Officers have been specially trained in how to respond to a Mental Health Consumer when that consumer is experiencing a crisis. The Wendell Police Department currently has nine C.I.T. Officers that can respond to a mental health crisis and help introduce Mental Health Consumers and their families to programs available within the community.
