Exciting news with Wendell Baseball All-Stars
Wendell Boys 13-14 All-Stars are the 2013 Tar Heel State Champions!!!
This team had unbelievable defense, speed, talent and pitching. That is what spearheaded them above the rest of the pack. Eleven players from 4 different Wendell Parks and Recreation teams combined to make the All-Star roster. After a few practices to develop chemistry, the Wendell All-Stars began tournament play where they went undefeated in all 3 tournaments. Between the 3 tournaments and 11 games Wendell outscored their opponents 128 runs to 18.
They started out their journey to the State Championship in Smithfield with the SJBA Invitational. They played 3 games to claim the Championship in the Invitational. The next challenge was the Tar Heel District 6 tournament hosted by Rocky Mount Parks and Recreation. The top 2 teams would be able to move on to play for the State Championship. Wendell went undefeated in this tournament winning 4 games. They outscored their opponents 49-4. Eight teams would now have the chance to play in Williamston for the State Tar Heel Championship. Playing with Wendell were, Angier, Broadway, Chocowinity, Johnston County, Louisburg Riverside and Shelby. Four games and 42 runs later, Wendell was crowned champions for 2013! Wendell is coached by Woody Davis and his assistant coaches are David Creech, Sherwood Creech and Rob Torres. The 11 Man roster consist of: Davis Cockrell, Hunter Creech, Peyton Creech, Geradiel Hernandez Davila, Will Davis, Tyler Eckert, Wellington Guzman, Quez Holden, Ben Tilley, Justin Torres and Austin Vernon.
Some stand out points for this team are: one homerun – Quez Holden hit a 2 run homerun against Riverside in the opening game of the State Championship. Superb pitching by 5 guy, Davis Cockrell, Geradiel Hernandez Davila, Will Davis, Justin Torres and Austin Vernon. Austin Vernon batted 7 for 8 in the last 2 games of the State Championship with 4 doubles and 7 RBI. Every team that Wendell faced batted a 9 man line-up and Wendell batted all 11 for every game.
